New York City is an exciting place to visit any time of the year. Whether you’re visiting for pleasure or work, you should find time to discover some of the attractions and experiences that make New York such an energetic, captivating and unique city.If you’re interested in theater at all, Broadway doesn’t have to be an expensive night out. At every Broadway performance, there are front-row tickets held sold for a fraction of the regular price through the Broadway lottery. You just sign up the day of the show at the box office and drawings are held a couple of hours later – you usually need to be present to win. Lately, the New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera have been offering the same type of ticket lottery.
If you don’t have a lot of time or cash, hanging out in Times Square and Central Park offer a wealth of entertainment for practically nothing. The Naked Cowboy of Times Square is running for mayor of New York City and has been out in full campaign mode (and wearing nothing but his tighty-whities and a guitar). Several other performers have been known to play in these places – including indie singer Amanda Palmer (of the Dresden Dolls), who has played a character she calls “The Bride” and Therisa Barber, who is Central Park’s ballerina mime.
Hanging out in Times Square will also make sure you’re told about all the free comedy shows and food and drink specials nearby. There is almost always some sort of special being promoted and one of the things that makes New York City unique is that these specials are advertised on foot and by word of mouth.
Lastly, don’t forget to save time to discover the rich variety of food and shopping opportunities all over the city. While New York may be known for certain restaurants and big, name-brand department stores, don’t be afraid to peek into hole-of-the-wall cafes and shops. Sometimes the best deals aren’t well known.
